Default Interesting Performance Info - "MOTOR"

See October issue of MOTOR p107 in the article
BANG FOR BUCKS - lots of interesting and good and not so
good stuff - UP THE RX thingos, but them Wrexes!

Too much to post, but 0-400, 0-100k, lap times, top speed
down straight and testers comments very informative.

was this the one where the WRX sti came first and the 350z came second in it's class?

I still think some of those guys must be treating the Z as it was on boost. Surely we can do better than 6.4 0-100 with a little practice.

ok, with a lot of practice

Zuffy - don't get too upset about the 0-100kph times of the Z published in the mags. Several issues back in either Wheels or Motor (can't remember which), I read that they dial up 3000rpm for stanstill takeoffs in the Z. When I read that I thought, no wonder you can't get a faster 0-100 time, cause if you let the clutch go at that many RPM's, you get bags of wheel spin, which doesn't help your 0-100 times. I find I only need to dial up 2200 - 2400 MAX to get a fast take off with slight wheel screech to give good forward momentum. So for one, I reckon the car testers in the mags are wasting too much time spinning at the start. But I'm prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt and they may have a better launch technique than me, so lets assume that they get the best out of the car off the line.
When you look at all the cars in the list with faster 0-100 times, all of them (with perhaps the exception of the Elise - not sure???) reach 100kph in 2nd gear. Compare that to the Z which is geared for 0-60mph (0-96kph I think) times, and we need to throw it into 3rd to get to 100kph. Now considering the fact that the fastest electronic gear change is achieved on a Ferrari, which takes 0.15s, and this is supposed to be much quicker than a human can change gears in a conventional box, it would take a normal human being at least 0.2s to achieve a convetional gear change. So the Z's 0-100 times are 0.2s slower due only to the need for an additional gear change that the otthers don't require until after 100kph. If you've got the Motor mag from 2 months ago, check out the times of the Z v RX8 at each 10kph increment and you can see from the differences when the RX8 needs to change into third as the 10kph split increases dramatically, due to the fact that the Z had changed into 3rd gear in an earlier 10kph split and with its superior torque is gaining a lot of forward momentum.
Anyhow, if you're going to drag someone, you don't stop at 100kmph and claim a victory!!! You keep going untill the car behind slows in recognition that he / you could not catch you / him (depending on what your dragging).
Anyway, with your 171kW, GT-R's will eat your dust (j/k)

lol... dunno about the GTRs but the HSVs maybe

Well said on the 3rd gear shift. I didn't consider that as the problem with Motor and Wheels.

One other thing. Wheels always time their 1-100 and 1/4 mile times with a full tank of gass and a passenger. You're talking 100kg+ of excess bagagge. You'll notice that Wheels times are slower than those in Motor in all cars due to this "standard testing criterea".

Little known fact
All Aust delivered 350Z's have a 200rpm higher rev limit programed in for 2nd gear only to allow them to reach 100kph in 2nd.
Don't beleive me. well try yours out.

I'll test it when its dry.
I even remember the mag article saying they had to change to 3rd to get to 100.

Nathan, as I have posted elsewhere I can just get to 100 in second. It's bouncing of the rev limiter though!!!

OK, tried it out safely on the Freeway.

Im afraid the extra 200 rpm missed mine.

I hit rev limiter, 6600rpm, at exactly 100 km hr.

Fact turns into Fiction & I,ve got egg on my face.

The extra 200rpm info came from the Manager- Engineering & Support Training, Nissan Motor Co. Aust.

I could not check it out on my car as the rev limiter has been removed

Nathan, I feel violated now.

I want, no demand, my extra 200rpm.

Finally remembered to try this out tonight. FWIW I touched 100 just as the rev limiter cut in. Forgot to look at the revs though so can't comment on the extra 200rpm in 2nd.

It seems that everyone is hitting 100kph as the rev limiter is hit. This again emphasises the point I made earlier about the Z needing to get into 3rd to see 100kph times posted in the mags. When you think that the cars are timed with a Corivette (???spelling), over 0-400m, then the 0-100kph times are extracted from the Corivette timer. Of course the driver is trying to get the best 1/4 mile time and will not hit the rev limiter in 2nd, just to get a good 0-100kph time and totally stuff up the 1/4 mile time. So the driver must change from 2nd to 3rd gear just before the rev limiter is hit and that costs the Z time in the 0-100kph split. I'd think that if a seperate run was done for the 0-100kph time, hitting the limiter on 100, then I suspect a slightly faster time by say 2-3 tenths max.
However, I could be totaly wrong and the mags might have seperate runs for 0-100kph and 1/4 mile times. In fact, I will e-mail the editor of Motor and ask him how they are achieved.
