Although oil pump failure is rare on our engines, you must be special

Julian...Do you think a Harmonic Balancer (damper) would benefit
the 350Z engines as the chain drive and internals have to be affected
somewhat with the RPM range it runs? I ran offshore boats with large
632 cu in and lost high $ valve train parts after 100 hours. With a belt
drive for cam shaft, got an extra 25 hours and with a 8" harmonic balancer
instead of a 7", gained another 45 hours on top of the rest. Bearings looked
alot better with even 1 more inch of Balancer. As far as oil pumps, ran external
so never ran into your problem.
Is the Nismo a thicker casting, more volume or what?
Just would like your opinion.
Thanks

The outer case of the Nismo pump is identical. If you put them side by side, you can't even tell the difference between the two. The modifications are all internal.
I too, think that some extreme crankshaft movements caused this pump to crack in half. Nasty.

The VQ's don't gain much if anything from externaly balanced pulleys. Just my

Pumps failing is so rare in ALL motors and in all cases is just massive wear that reduces Pressure/Volumn or in rare situations, Pressure Valve failures.
Unless there is indication on whats left of the gears that something got in there (unlikely) it was as stated, a fluke, possibly aided by a poor cast, and if you know what your looking for, will show up in the wreakage.
Of course the question comes to mind---What came first ? The Chicken or the egg ?.........Did the broken gear shatter the housing or did the cracked housing bust up the gear ?
