Default FP Exclusive 1st: The VQ35HR Dissected

Jeremy's 2007 350Z has been spending a lot of quality time at Forged Peformance. After installing his Greddy EvoTT exhaust, test pipes, and making 265whp (Dyno Dynamics)without any tuning (+17whp), it was time for the next step.

Jeremy agreed to allow our technicians to remove his engine and transmission for a thorough inspection. We are hoping he'll allow us to completely take the darn thing down to the rotating assembly components, but that might have to wait.

Aside from the obvious differences between the VQ35DE and the VQ35HR, we found some interesting things, in no particular order...just things that we observed

1) After-market turbo and NA exhaust manfiolds will physically bolt up to the heads.
2) Cam Position Sensors are mounted to the valve covers, perpendicular to the engine.
3) Crank position sensor is located at the 2 o'clock position, instead of the 7 o'clock position
4) Valve Covers and Coil Packs are larger. The coil packs look similar to the design of the Titan coil packs
5) It appears the engineers clearanced certain things for turbo....foundation for the GT-R??
6) Cooling system is completely resdesigned. The main coolant return pipe runs through the center of the block "V".
7) Twin Knock Sensors
8) Main ECU connectors are twin style, and completely different (current PnP systems will not work, but hardwiring will be possible)
8) Main ECU engine harness SIGNIFICANTLY streamlined, better integrated, and less cluttered....we like this setup!
9) Transmission is completely upgraded
10) Clutch fork has been deleted. Now uses an internal slave cylinder mounted on the input shaft, which directly actuates the TO bearing. Very cool...seen this before on late model FWD cars, and is becoming more common these days.
11) Semi-equal length manifolds...not the best, but better than last year's model.

These are just our preliminary findings and we'll post more info as we get it.

Out of curiosity, will previous year's headers work with the HR?

They will not. The length is different, and there are different clearance issues.

Is this the same engine that is in the 07 g35 sport sedan? (albeit a different transmission) please excuse my noobness.

Thanks for the info...was waiting for all this. Is it still true that pretty much only interchangeable mods are exhaust? And that's it...? What about lighter flywheel? pulleys? etc. can we use anything else from previous models Z's to make more power?

Also do you have any idea when a UTEC may be available for the 07?

With only test pipes and exhaust...how much more do you think you can pull out of it with a UTEC(once it's available)? 10-15 hp?

I believe that will strongly depend on the 07 stock ECU, and its response to changing breathing bolt-ons.

Also, most likely the ECU will be running to optimize emissions rather than power (that is to say, near 14.7 AFR). If you find that "magic AFR" for the 07 you will make more power for sure.

Nice finds. Curious about the strength of the internals... but I guess you guys won't be tearing that far into it just yet.

yeah Jeremy (Performance Factory) tried hooking up a Cipher to my 07 and it didnt allow him to control timing (new ECM and software)... he wanted to pull it 2 degress for an easy 10rwhp.

Most likely the 07 ECU has been reworked to, among other things, control dual MAFs and TBs

can you tell if the 07 engine harness will interface with the chassis correctly if someone wanted to do a HR conversion to an older Z?

Thanks!

Got any pics of the exhaust manifolds without heat shields? wondering if aftermarket headers will flow better for NA...

the car had a little over 700 i think danya saide 741miles

as for the ECM the ECM is now three sperete connectors and a lot more pins. most likely ready for the GT-R for controlling boost and the diveretor valves. like sharif said before some the coolant piping on the side of the motor are missing or much smaller and now run through the V of the block. getting ready for the charge pipes from the turbos of the GT-R. im thinking something like a greddy TT kit but having the charge pipes coming up higher than the valve covers.

i dont think Utec will be making anything for this ECU for a while due to the face that there are much more controls and sensors on this new motor. not to mention the varible llift of the VQ37HR in the new G coupe.

A HR swap will be quie costly due to the different CAN systems of the different years. coming from a dealership the CAN system is the hardest problem we face when doing a abnormal engine swap. you would have to swap the entire wiring harness of the car and all ECMs and switches since some if not most are now controled with different types of signals.

it going to some time till someone figures out how to control and trick the stock ecm due to the twin TB and MAF.

I dont think the ECM is tuned for emissions they have dont that for years now, with the cold rich start up. as for power with a Utec tune it all depends on how well that stock AFR and timing can be changed to make more power. other than that with out some breathing mods not much is goinng to be able to change.
