Well after getting my tranny replaced and feeling the knotch that felt like it didn't belong when shifting from 4th to 5th,

I figured there was something that could be done and sure enough a fellow Z member came through with some advice. So I took it upon myself to record the process and share it with you guys:

Reach in and pull up on metal ring surrounding shifter, it should pop up with a little force


Then just pull gently on the entire piece, its held in by clips which come free easily


You can disconnect this wire, but it was being a pain so I just let it be and placed the entire panel to the side


Now to disconnect the shift ****, place vice grips where shown, hold steady to counteract any stress being placed on the shifter itself when you unscrew the ****. Some people have snapped the shifter so dont skip the vice grips step.


Next there are 4 10mm bolts holding this plate in place, loosen them and pull the entire plate off. Be sure to first remove the cotton skirt, and rubber boot. NOTE there is a small brass ring above the rubber boot I didn't get a picture of, you'll see it though.


Now remove the second, smaller rubber boot

This will leave you with this

YOU'VE NOW REACHED THE ADJUSTMENT PLATE! Loosen these three bolts pointed to, do not remove. Press the entire plate as far to the left as posible, while pressing, tighten the bolts. Make sure to tighten them good since the shifter will be pressing against this plate some times.

You're now done, just put everything back together. One note, when puting the shift **** back on, hold the boot as the seems as such
so that the seems line up when you're done, rather than getting pulled with the turning of the ****.

I knew about this when I had the problem, but instead just had Mossy Nissan fix it when I went it for a variety of complaints. Needless to say, I wish I had done it myself. Their solution? Thread-lock. Now I cannot take the shifter off.

 

Why/how does this fix the problem??? What does it change, just the position of the plate??

 

awesome. ive been needed to do this since my tranny was replaced like 2 years ago! i've just been too lazy to figure out how.

 

Yes this fixed the problem, and this is why. The little square metal piece you see on the lower right portion of the shifter, actually is supposed to hit the metal plate to stop it from moving over. My guess is that when dealers are replacing trannys they aren't taking the time to adjust this. Naturally, there is room for the shifter to move over to the right for reverse, but when you push the plate over to the left it stops it from going into that groove unless you push down on the shifter.

Same here, at one point I was power shifting into 5th and it got stuck. I had to yank the shifter back to neutral with force. Thanks for the great guide!
